what is the major shift that weber sees in the historical development of western society?
and very likely ultimately the world?
also what is at least one recent event in national or internationl events which supports Weber's contention, and explain how this illustrates the shift.
you dont have to tell me everything, i just need to figure out how to start this, i dont really understand the questions, so if you can help me with that and help give examples so i can better understand what this is saying that would be fine.

There are a good many clear discussions, on the web, of Weber's key ideas which cover these key points.(see below)
He is said to have 'argued with the ghost of Marx' about the nature of modern socity and especially about the nature of power in modern societies. Although he agreed with Marx about the significance of the development of the power of Capital he argued that 'economic power' was not the only dimension to be considered, but that 'power as social status ' and, especially ,changes in the form political power were distinct dimensions that could not be covered by the analysis of the rise of Capitalism.
Thus his major argument is that modern society is primarily a society governed by Rationalist Bureaucratic forms of power.
Thus that both Capitalist and Socialist societies were dominated by their different forms of bureaucratic power. This rise of modern bureaucratic forms of power had both advantages but also major disadvantages. So like Marx he says that modern people are at risk of losing their 'humanity' of being 'estranged' , but he saw the problem as the danger of becoming trapped in 'the iron cage' of rationality.
Moreover he is far more pessismistic than Marx as he saw the rise of Socialism as one more aspect of the central problem of estrangement rather than its possible solution.
ps for an view from a late modernist sociologist George Ritzer which neatly dovetails the earlier work of both Marx and Weber see Ritzers re working of Weber's thesis in hisinflluential work on MacDonaldization
(note - this doesn't mean that Ritzer is just worried about too many people eating fatty hamburgers - rather that Macdonalds as a global economic organisation has pushed to the limits the system of rational organisation for profitability. So today, people all over the world, in institutions like schools, hospitals, government organisations, even child care, and on profit making institutions, are being subjected to the five elements of Macdonalization that are the revised, and even more estranging ,dehumanising processes, of this reworking of rational bureacratisation )
