Why is there a sequel to Everquest when the first Everquest game goes on forever and can't be beaten?
I can not imagine too many people playing Everquest 2 because either:
1. You are not a fan of Everquest.
or
2. You are a fan of Everquest, but you are still playing the first Everquest game and you will never beat it, so that you could never go on to play Everquest 2.
Everquest can not be beaten. It is simply not that kind of videogame.
First let me state that I am talking from the perspective of a player who played both EQ1 and EQ2 (I still play EQ2 and recently reactivated my EQ1 acct)
There are a lot of reasons there are 2 now. First - newer technology allows them to create better graphics and more complex content. Geez, how long has EQ1 been out anyway. I started playing it in about 2001 or 2 - so long ago I don't remember. EQ1 is a great game but it definitely need improvement in gameplay for the average player. It is rather endgame centric and those who play casually were left with not much to do. Another reason - competition - specifically world of warcraft. Quite simply, with a new MMORPG coming out from a major company, they had to do something new before they lost all of their players to WoW. Sure, they could have just overhauled EQ1, but gamers will always try the latest game. So if they all went and "tried" WoW - and stayed (as many did) - and had nothing new of SOE's to come back to - they would lose millions.
I have to say I like EQ2 much more than 1. I am a casual player, I don't raid etc. But I like to have lots of content and quests available to me at all levels of the game. I like to enjoy "playing" the game not just getting to the top. EQ2 is a much better fit for me than EQ1. It seems like most MMORPGs are all endgame based - and getting there is just a steady grind. How boring is that. EQ2 is a totally different game than EQ1. There is an ongoing lore storyline from EQ1 to EQ2 but other than that the gameplay is totally different. Even the class system is different.
Anyway - there are plenty of reasons for a new one. I thought they would phase the old one out but as long as there is money to be made off of it, it will still exist too - and they keep putting out expansions for both so who knows. EQ1 is A LOT of work compared to probably any other MMORPG. I think people just wanted a change.
