Come Eat
How come lions can eat raw meat without getting food poisoning?
How come lions and other carnovors can eat raw meat and not get food poisoning???
I mean humans are carnivors too, but how come our meat is eaten cooked, whilst animals can just eat them raw??
Answerer #3 is correct in saying that much of the danger from food poisoning comes from having meat sitting around for a long time before eating it. However, wild animals do sometimes eat rotten meat without getting sick. Why is this?
It's because humans have a pretty wimpy digestive system compared to other animals. This was actually an important evolutionary adaptation, because it takes a lot of energy to digest, for example, rotten meat without getting sick. This is also why koalas sleep so much--their primary food source is the poisonous eucalyptus plant, which, since it's poisonous to other creatures, gives them a food source with no competition. But the cost is that it takes a lot of energy out of them to digest the leaves without getting sick.
When humans learned to cook food, we were able to kill a lot of germs and break down a lot of toxins before food ever got into our digestive systems. This allowed our digestive systems to shrink without having an ill effect on our survival rate. And with less energy requirements for the digestive system, there was more energy available for our brains. Big brains require a LOT of energy and protein to keep them running--the human brain accounts for about 20-25% of the total energy consumption in the human body. This is one big reason why few animals have brains as big and smart as ours. But when we learned to cook, it allowed us to save a lot of energy that would otherwise be spent on either constantly finding fresh food or on digesting dangerous old food. That energy could then go towards supporting brain function. It seems to have worked out pretty well for us!
